The Whānau/Family Feather has been created by hand from recycled rubber to represent your whānau.
Length approximately 22-24 cm.
At the top of the piece are 9 small holes. These symbolise the star formation Matariki. Matariki appears in the Southern Hemisphere’s night sky normally in June or July. Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed – our tupuna; to celebrate new life and serve as a reminder to plan for our future.
The Southern Cross/Te Pae Māhutonga in the design represents your grandparents. This can be included or omitted.
The X in the design is the artists interpretation of tukutuku panel designs. These represent the tamariki/children within the whānau.
The Koru at the base of the piece represent the whānau unit that resides within the whare/house and includes the mama and papa.
The umbilical cord at the end is a reminder that we are always connected together through our whānau and via our whenua/land.
Each feather is custom made to represent your individual whanau. You let us know how many X’s you’d like and how many koru you would like.
